Paris through our eyes - Luxembourg & Quartier Latin

Luxembourg

In this green and peaceful zone, you can find The Luxembourg gardens, where the Palais du Luxembourg stands quietly, watching couples, runners and tourists walking around its paths.

A beautiful place to rest for a wile.

Not far from the Palais du Luxembourg, another church marks its presence: St-Sulpice.

And as always, the streets were full of beautiful and interesting people.

Quartier Latin

In this district, dedicated to education and culture, you can find La Sorbonne (the headquarters of Paris' University), the Collège de France (one of the most important college of Paris), and several churches, bookstores, museums and Jazz clubs.

St-Michel:

Near La Sorbonne, the Panthéon holds the tombs of the most remarkable personalities of France.

Paris through our eyes - Opéra

Opéra

Welcome to the Opéra, the district where you can find... the Opera! And La Madeleine, Les Passages and Les Grands Boulevards with amazing shops... but lets start with the National Opera.

This beautiful building was finished in 1875 and became a symbol of the opulence of the second empire. Our guide book says that it's interior was also beautiful, with Belle Epoque designs, but unfortunatly the Opera was exceptionally close that weekend. Well, here is the amazing exterior:

Once more, the streets were bustling with people, the coffee shops we beautiful and the chocolateries were so, so tempting!

La Madeleine

The church consagrated to Marie Madelaine, an imponent monument that looks down the street to the Place de la Concorde.

Walking through the streets, here's what we found...

Les Passages

In this area you can also find Les Passages. These were the most important shopping galleries during the XIX century, until they were abandoned and then recovered in the 70s. Today, placed between the big boulevards, they offer you an endless choice of coffee shops, book stores, antique stores and other cute treasures, all under beautiful glass and iron ceilings.

Paris through our eyes - Tuileries

Tuileries

On the other bank of the Seine, you can find the Tuileries. This district is the home of the amazing Louvre museum, next to which lies the Tuileries gardens and the Rue Rivoli, with all its parallel and cross streets.

Starting at the Place de La Concorde, you can walk down the Rue Rivoli beneath the galeries of the buildings, where coffee shops, pastries and other cute shops open their doors to you.

From the Rue Rivoli, its possible for you to enter the Carrossell du Louvre, a shopping center, right underneath the museum, where you can find La Pyramide Inversée, familiar for those who read or saw the Da Vinci's Code.

At the east entrance of the Louvre, you can find the St-Germain l'Auxerrois church.

Musée du Louvre

Its true what they say about its size... the Louvre is giant! It's impossible to see everything in one afternoon... and I assure you, we tried...

The best thing you can do is to look at the museum's map and choose what you really want to see. Since Theo is an Archaeology lover, we started at the Egypt and ancient Greek section, and walked our way to the paintings.

Paris through our eyes - St-Germain-des-Prés

St-Germain-des-Prés

You can find St-Germain-des-Prés right on the left bank of Seine river. Full of beautiful old buildings, art galleries and cute coffee shops, its also the place to find the Orsay's Museum, the St Germain des Prés church, the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and to walk down the Saint Germain Boulevard.

We arrived to this area by RER, to the station Musée d'Orsay, right in front of the museum and by the river. This was the first thing we say, the Seine under a gray sky and the Palais Royal looking at us from the other side of the river.

Right on the other side of the road was the Musée de la Légion d'Honneur and the fantastic Musée d'Orsay.

The Musée d'Orsay

Built inside the old train station, this museum keeps a beautiful collection of art, from 1848 to 1914. Its main attraction is the superb collection of Impressionist works. You can marvel upon the Monet's water lilies, the Van Gogh's room and self portraits, and all the fantastic collection of Art Nouveau.

It was prohibited to take pictures of the paintings and sculptures, but we got some photos from the interior and exterior of the museum.

If you are a lover of the art of this period, we strongly recommend a visit. Note that all the European citizens under 25 years of age have free entrance in this museum, like in many other museums and monuments in Paris, so, start planning your trip before you hit 25! ;)

Walking along the Quai Anatole France and the Quai Voltaire you can appreciate the river banks, the bustling streets, the stalls selling souvenirs and the late Autumn trees with the last yellow leaves...

There was one particular thing that caught our eyes, the bikes and the cyclists. Well dressed people cycling though the streets with rented or personal bikes... even under rain, even while wearing some high heels!

At the river bank you can also find the Saints-Pères port, the Istitut de France and the Pont des Arts, where lovers can leave a lock as a sign of their love...

There's something amazing about the streets of Paris, even the smallest ones can hide an amazing place. From art galleries and bookstores to coffee shops, tearooms and clothe boutiques, there are not enough eyes to capture every detail.

We found one of the stores of Ladurée, the famous candy store where you can find the best macarons in Paris, or at least the most expensive ones.

We also found the oldest coffee shop in Paris, Le Procope, founded in 1686.

And at last, you have to visit the church of St-Germain-des-Prés!

As some of you know, we just graduated from college in Medicine! And so, when some colleagues of ours thought about making an yearbook and then asked us if we could participate with some photos of Coimbra and it's traditions for the cover we were really, really happy!

Choupal, dia de sol, poucas nuvens no céu. Um bom dia para passear e fazer algumas experiências fotográficas. O ar já húmido e pintado de Outono prometia cores quentes e cogumelos.

Como sempre, a calma e o cheiro fresco a Natureza fizeram-nos sentir em casa.
Caminhamos um pouco em silêncio, máquinas em punho mas ainda sem um objectivo concreto, até que o Teo decidiu enveredar pelo retrato e experimentar a lente macro na Pi.

E enquanto a Pi olhava em volta, encontrou o primeiro espécime de fungos: Algo parecido a um cogumelo gigante e sem pé que invadia o resto do que foi outrora uma grande arvore, como que deslizando sobre o tronco enquanto incorporava em si caules e folhas caídas.

Mais à frente, novos cogumelos, estes mais definidos e alaranjados, empilhavam-se na base de um plátano.

Atravessamos uma das pontes de madeira…

… para nos deparar-mos com um novo conjunto de cogumelos, suspensos, como pequenos telhados, do resto de um tronco enorme.

A Pi dedicou-se ao macro…

…o Teo não resistiu e subiu ao tronco para experimentar novos ângulos.

Estes foram alguns dos resultados:

Estes pequenos insectos fizeram a pi desesperar e desejar um tripé e uma hora mais luminosa…

E não, o Teo não caiu, chegou cá em baixo são e salvo.

A luz já era escassa quando pensamos em voltar para casa. Aproveitamos a penumbra para fazer uma pequena experiência com o flash.

Não foi a iluminação perfeita, mas ficamos a saber que o para-sol do carro do Teo também pode servir de reflector. =)
